New publication by TAIMI researcher Yannick Lahti examines the future of democracy
TAIMI researcher Yannick Lahti and journalist and non-fiction author Matti Mörttinen will publish a new book, Jäähyväiset demokratialle (Farewell to Democracy), in September 2026.
The book explores one of the most pressing questions facing contemporary societies: What happens when democracy can no longer be taken for granted? The authors examine the challenges confronting democratic systems, including political polarization, the transformation of public debate, the rise of populist movements, and the impact of technological and media developments on democratic institutions.
According to the publisher, the book asks how democratic societies have reached the current situation, where principles such as the rule of law and freedom of expression are increasingly contested, and what citizens can do to strengthen democracy in the future. The authors argue that democracy should be understood not only as a right but also as a shared responsibility.

Jäähyväiset demokratialle continues the collaboration between Lahti and Mörttinen, following their earlier books Populismin anatomia (2023) and Politiikan pinnan vangit (2024), which examined populism, political communication, and the changing nature of public discourse.
The publication connects closely with several themes that are central to TAIMI’s research agenda. As artificial intelligence, digital communication, and technological transformation reshape societies, understanding their implications for democratic participation, public trust, and societal cohesion becomes increasingly important.
Through research, public engagement, and scholarly contributions, TAIMI researchers continue to contribute to discussions about how technological and societal change can be managed in ways that support inclusive, resilient, and democratic futures.
