New publication by TAIMI researcher Edemilson Paraná explores power, governance, and the crisis of neoliberalism

TAIMI researcher Edemilson Paraná, together with Lucas Trindade and Alexandre Marinho Pimenta, has published a new article in the journal Historical Materialism titled “From Althusser to Foucault and Back: State, Discipline and Governmentality in the Crisis of Neoliberalism.”

The article examines how contemporary forms of power and governance can be understood in the context of ongoing transformations in neoliberal capitalism. Drawing on the influential work of philosophers Louis Althusser and Michel Foucault, the authors investigate how institutions, political systems, and social practices shape individual behaviour and societal norms.

A central contribution of the article is its analysis of how neoliberalism has evolved in recent decades and how changing forms of governance influence both political and economic life. The authors revisit foundational debates in social and political theory to develop new perspectives on the relationship between the state, power, and the production of social subjects.

The publication contributes to ongoing international discussions about democracy, governance, and the future of contemporary capitalism. These debates have become increasingly relevant as societies navigate rapid technological change, political polarization, and new forms of economic and social organization.

For TAIMI, understanding large-scale societal transformations is essential for examining how technological developments, labour markets, institutions, and public policies interact in shaping future societies. Research such as this provides important theoretical foundations for analysing the broader social consequences of technological and economic change.

The article was published online in Historical Materialism in April 2026.
