New publication by TAIMI researcher Edemilson Paraná examines the role of synthetic data in global finance
TAIMI researcher Edemilson Paraná has co-authored a new book chapter titled “Synthetic Digital Data in Global Finance: Great Expectations, What Realizations?”, published in the Research Handbook on Digital Data: Interdisciplinary Perspectives (2026).
Written together with Carolina Aguerre, Malcolm Campbell-Verduyn, and Marc Lenglet, the chapter investigates the growing interest in synthetic data, artificially generated datasets designed to replicate patterns found in real-world data, and its implications for the financial sector.
The authors examine the expectations surrounding synthetic data and assess how these technologies have been adopted in global finance. Their analysis shows that, despite significant enthusiasm from both industry and regulatory actors, the practical implementation of synthetic data remains relatively limited. Where adoption has occurred, it has often been driven by regulatory initiatives rather than by financial institutions themselves.
The chapter also highlights broader transformations in financial governance. As technology companies and data-focused firms become increasingly involved in shaping financial infrastructures and regulatory practices, new questions emerge regarding transparency, accountability, and risk management. The authors explore these developments at national, regional, and global levels.
The publication contributes to interdisciplinary discussions on digital transformation, data governance, and the societal impacts of emerging technologies. These themes closely connect with TAIMI’s broader research interests in technological change, artificial intelligence, and the ways digital innovations are reshaping institutions, work, and society.
The chapter appears in the Research Handbook on Digital Data: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, edited by Aleksi Aaltonen, Marta Stelmaszak, and Kalle Lyytinen, which brings together leading research on the growing role of digital data in organizational and social life.
