New TAIMI Publication Examines Career Identity After Geopolitical Disruption

We are pleased to share a new publication by TAIMI researcher Rebecca Piekkari, together with Virpi Outila and Carol Reade: Rising from the Ashes of Geopolitical Conflict: New Career Identities of Finnish Experts on Russia.

The article examines how the Russia–Ukraine war created significant career disruption for Finnish professionals whose expertise was closely connected to Russia. In addition to changes in employment, many of these professionals also experienced a loss of career identity.

The publication highlights how individuals rebuilt their professional identities through resilience, adaptation, and the search for new directions during a period of geopolitical upheaval.

The article connects closely with TAIMI’s themes of inclusion, mobility, and belonging. In many ways, the professionals studied became “migrants in their own country”, navigating displacement and transition without physically relocating.

The publication also offers practical recommendations for individuals, HR professionals, and public authorities on how to support people affected by sudden geopolitical and labour market changes.

We are proud to see TAIMI researchers contributing to both academic knowledge and wider societal impact.
